Why the Con?
The Sydney Conservatorium is one of the oldest and most prestigious music schools in Australia. It was home to Sydney’s first symphony orchestra and string quartets. Today, it combines the best of European and American music traditions to deliver its programs, creating an exciting blend of classic and contemporary music practitioners. It is centrally located in the CBD of Sydney, flanked by the Royal Botanic Gardens and just a stroll down Macquarie St to the harbourside cultural precinct and the Sydney Opera House. Its landmark location and close ties with the rest of Sydney’s cultural institutions give students a fabulous opportunity to engage with top music professionals and a head start for future careers.
Strong links to Australia’s professional orchestral life feature at the Conservatorium and include close ‘visiting staff’ relationships with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. In 1990 the Coservatorium became a faculty of The University of Sydney. Students have access to the vast range of courses, opportunities and services offered by Australia’s largest university.
The building, featuring the historical 1815 Stables building for Government House, designed by colonial architect, Francis Greenway, reopened in 2001 after extensive modernisation and expansion. Its award-winning new structures blend with the renovated original heritage buildings. The main concert hall holds 500, and the complex has recording studios and performance and practice spaces featuring the very latest in acoustic technology.
