Why Study at the Con?

The Sydney Conservatorium is one of the oldest and most prestigious music schools in Australia. It was home to Sydney’s first symphony orchestra and string quartet. Today, it combines the best of European and American music traditions to deliver its programs, creating an exciting blend of classic and contemporary music practitioners.
The Conservatorium is centrally located in Sydney's CBD, flanked by the Royal Botanic Gardens, and just a stroll down Macquarie St to the Sydney Opera House and harbourside cultural precinct. Its landmark location and close ties with the rest of Sydney’s cultural institutions give students a fabulous opportunity to engage with top music professionals and get head start on future careers.
Strong links to Australia’s professional orchestral life are a feature of the Conservatorium. We have close relationships with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and host many masterclasses and visiting artists each year.
For nearly two decades, the Conservatorium has been a faculty of the University of Sydney, Australia's largest university. Students at the Conservatorium also have access to the vast range of courses, opportunities and services offered by the University.
The Conservatorium is housed in a historic building that dates back to 1815. Designed by colonial architect, Francis Greenway, the one-time stables for Government House reopened in 2001 after extensive modernisation and expansion. Its award-winning new structure, blends in with the renovated original heritage buildings. The main concert hall holds 500, and the complex has recording studios and performance and practice spaces featuring the very latest in acoustic technology.
