Woodwind (Woodwind Unit)

Principal Study is available in bassoon, clarinet, flute, baroque flute, oboe, recorder, and saxophone.

Flute

Candidates should present at least two contrasting pieces (or excerpts of pieces) which total a maximum of 10 minutes playing time.

One of the selected pieces should demonstrate the candidate's technique and the other piece highlighting tonal expression and musicality. At least one piece must be with piano accompaniment.

There is no scale requirement for flute applicants.

Baroque Flute

Candidates should present two pieces of differing national style (French, Italian or German), which total a maximum of 10 minutes playing time. The presented repertoire can be accompanied as needed.

There is no scale requirement for baroque flute applicants.

Recorder

Candidates should present two contrasting pieves which total a maximum of 10 minutes playing time. One piece should be post 1950. The presented repertoite can be accompanied as needed.

There is no scale requirement for recorder applicants.

Oboe

Candidates will be required to present the major and harmonic minor scales, arpeggios and inversions up to and including 3 sharps and flats. Candidates should use the scale patterns/articulations that they are accustomed to practising with special attention to tone and intonation.

Candidates must also present one solo piece, which may be a study or from the solo repertoire and one piece with accompaniment. Total playing time should be a maximum of 10 minutes.

Clarinet

Candidates may be required to present all major and minor scales, plus arpeggios and inversons. Candidates should use the scale patterns/articulations that they are accustomed to practising.

Candidates must also present at least two contrasting pieces (or excerpts of pieces) which total a maximum of 10 minutes playing time. At least one piece must be with piano accompaniment.

Bassoon

Candidates will be required to present the major and harmonic scales, arpeggios and inversion up to and including 3 sharps and flats. Candidates should use the scale patterns/articulations that they are accustomed to practising with special attention to tone and intonation.

Candidates must also present one solo piece, which may be a study or from the solo repertoire and one piece with accompaniment. Total playing time should be a maximum of 10 minutes.

Saxophone

Each audition will take approximately 10 – 15 minutes. The panel will be looking for the prospective student to demonstrate a refinement of tone, technique and musicality. If you have any further questions please contact Dr. Michael Duke:

Bachelor of Music (Performance) and Diploma of Music:

  1. Technical Requirements:
    * Chromatic, all major and minor scales (harmonic and melodic) and arpeggios in various articulations
    * One scale of your choice that reaches into the first few notes of the altissimo register
  2. prepared program:
    * One movement from a major concerto or sonata with piano accompaniment (eg: Glazunov, Heiden, Creston, Milhaud, Maurice etc.)
    * One contrasting shorter work (with or without accompaniment)
  3. Sight reading.

Bachelor of Music Studies/Bachelor of Music (Music Education)/combined Degrees:

  1. Technical requirements:
    * Chromatic, Major and Minor scales (harmonic and melodic) and arpeggios up to three sharps and flats
  2. Prepared program:
    * Two contrasting pieces (or movements from larger works) with piano accompaniment
  3. Sight reading.
