Early Music

The Sydney Conservatorium of Music is one of the most vibrant institutions in Australia at which to study early music and historical performance. At both undergraduate and postgraduate level principal study is offered on instruments such as recorder, baroque and classical flute, harpsichord and fortepiano, baroque violin and viola, cello, bass and bassoon, viola da gamba, baroque oboe, baroque trumpet, horn, and sackbut, with plans for expansion in other areas.

In addition to academic course work, vital performance experience is gained through the Chamber Music programme and the Orchestral Studies programme where students can join the Early Music Ensemble (the Conservatorium period instrument baroque orchestra) which meets twice weekly and performs four exciting programmes per year. Masterclasses and lecture demonstrations from local and international artists add much to the student experience, as does the Early Music Performance Workshop at which students receive performance experience and hands-on feedback from teachers and fellow peers.
