SCM Saxophone Audition Requirements

Undergraduate Degrees

Each audition will take approximately 10 – 15 minutes. The panel comprised of faculty from the woodwind unit will be looking for the prospective student to demonstrate: a full, rich, supported tone, musicality in interpretation, awareness of intonation and intervallic relationships, musical incorporation of vibrato and phrasing, technical facility and most importantly musical potential.

Audition material should include at least two or more contrasting pieces, or excerpts of pieces, of around 10 minutes duration. At least one piece must be with accompaniment. Some suggestions for repertoire include works by composers such as Glazunov, Heiden, Creston, Milhaud, and Maurice.

If you have any further questions please contact

Graduate Degrees

Postgraduate Candidates should present an audition comprising a 50 minute recital of advanced and varied works performed to a high level of excellence. The recital must include one major work.

Research applicants will also be required to submit a research proposal and referees reports.

Audition Tips . . .

  • Be careful not to choose pieces that are above your current playing level.
  • Aim to select contrasting works that show both lyrical and technical sides of your playing.
  • Choose an accompanist that you have worked with before and can contribute musically to your audition.
