gamelan ensemble with dancers

Playing Balinese gamelan

In 2006 the Sydney Conservatorium of Music imported a specially commissioned Balinese gamelan. The gamelan semaradana is the first gamelan owned by the Conservatorium, and the first of its kind in Australia. We are privileged to open up the Conservatorium’s resources to a broad audience and to present this rare opportunity to find out more about this fascinating set of instruments.

The workshop will provide a hands-on introduction to playing in a Balinese gamelan ensemble using the traditional model-and-copy method of learning. It will open a practical window onto the form of Balinese gamelan music and the many aspects of Balinese culture and religion that are so intimately bound up with its performance practice.
